Able Community’s Press Release

(Chicagoland, IL. November 2019) 501(c)(3) non-profit, Able Community, is crowdfunding to enable people with disabilities to live independently and to provide affordable, accessible, inclusive housing. It is raising $5,000 to renovate the basement bathroom to make the basement live-able for caregivers, AKA personal assistants or personal care assistants, and people with physical or intellectual disabilities who can climb stairs.

Able Community is made up of persons with and without disabilities building affordable cooperative housing (“co-housing”) for people with and without disabilities seeking employment. Board members comprise of four University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign alumni with disabilities.

Able Community is the only inclusive cooperative housing for people with disabilities in the United States. Able Community moved into our first house in 2017. We provided three young adults with physical and intellectual disabilities, as well as a personal care assistant, with housing since then, and are building capacity for more residents.

Finding adequate housing and personal care for people with disabilities is a constant struggle. Inaccessible housing literally makes people with disabilities prisoners in their own homes. Housing discrimination complaints based on disability are the most frequent.

The basement is partially finished with a bathroom that needs repairs and a bedroom connected to the bathroom. Able Community needs to replace the cracked shower and add a door so that others, in addition to the adjoining bedroom occupant can access the bathroom. A local Bath Fitters donated parts for a new shower, but Able Community still needs to pay for labor and a new bathroom entrance. Any funds raised over the needed $5,000 will go to additional basement repairs and rent scholarship for residents with disabilities.

Crowdfunding starts on November 7, 2019 through the end of the month. Reward perks include art and handcrafted jewelry by local artisans with disabilities, a maid for a day, Venus Flytrap plants, airfare, and a meet and greet with horses at a therapeutic riding barn.
